Background of the Study

Emergency medical services (EMS) are critical components of any healthcare system, serving as the first point of care in life‐threatening situations. In Kano State, rapid urbanization and population growth have placed increasing demands on EMS. Despite efforts by state authorities to improve response times and service coverage, there remain concerns about the adequacy and distribution of EMS resources. Many residents in both urban and rural areas report difficulties in accessing timely emergency care, which can result in preventable morbidity and mortality. Factors affecting EMS availability include limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, shortage of trained personnel, and inefficient dispatch systems. Furthermore, geographical challenges and uneven distribution of healthcare facilities contribute to disparities in service delivery. Recent studies highlight that regions with well‐developed EMS systems experience better survival rates and overall health outcomes, yet Kano State’s system has not been comprehensively evaluated. This study proposes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from service records with qualitative interviews of EMS personnel and community members, to assess the current state of emergency medical services. It will explore key challenges, such as response times, coverage gaps, and resource allocation, while also considering community perceptions and satisfaction levels. The results are expected to inform policymakers on necessary improvements to ensure equitable access to emergency care, ultimately enhancing overall public health in Kano State.

Statement of the Problem

In Kano State, emergency medical services are reportedly insufficient, leading to delays in response and compromised patient outcomes. Despite governmental initiatives to upgrade EMS, many communities still face barriers in accessing timely care. Inadequate funding, limited ambulance fleets, and uneven distribution of EMS stations are frequently cited as challenges. Moreover, the lack of continuous training for EMS personnel and an inefficient communication network further exacerbate the problem. These issues are particularly pronounced in rural areas where geographical barriers add to delayed responses. As a result, patients with critical conditions may not receive lifesaving interventions in time, contributing to higher rates of preventable deaths. The existing literature offers limited insight into the specific challenges faced by EMS in Kano State, thereby hindering targeted interventions. This study aims to fill that gap by providing a systematic evaluation of EMS availability, assessing both the quantitative performance indicators and qualitative experiences of service users and providers.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the current availability and distribution of EMS resources in Kano State.

2. To identify key operational challenges affecting EMS performance.

3. To propose recommendations for improving EMS coverage and response times.

Research Questions

1. What is the current state of EMS availability in Kano State?

2. What are the primary challenges affecting EMS performance?

3. How can EMS services be improved to ensure timely emergency care?

Research Hypotheses

1. Limited EMS resources are significantly associated with delayed response times.

2. Rural areas experience greater EMS inadequacies compared to urban centers.

3. Strategic resource allocation and enhanced training will improve EMS performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will target selected urban and rural EMS facilities in Kano State. Data will be collected through service records, interviews with EMS staff, and community surveys. Limitations include potential reporting bias and difficulties in obtaining up-to-date service data.

Definitions of Terms

• Emergency Medical Services (EMS): Systems that provide urgent pre-hospital care and transportation to healthcare facilities.

• Response Time: The time interval between the receipt of an emergency call and the arrival of EMS personnel.

• Coverage: The geographical and population reach of EMS resources.
